By other accounts, the People’s Republic Of China has the best facial recognition game, and it is used comprehensively. Chinese are not white.

That's kind of the point. It's not that the technology is inherently biased, it's that it's being optimized (via training data and user testing) for some populations over others. The PRC facial recognition system is specifically tuned for the Chinese.

Here's what I don't understand: The online complaint seems to be "lame technology designed by white men makes it harder for the government to spy on people of color." People are actually *offended* that the spying technology is not tuned to pick them out! Very strange...

I think the problem is not that it’s not effective. It’s that it’s not effective and treated as though it’s effective. So, POC are disproportionately affected by uncritical applications of this type of tech, say, in the criminal justice system.

Also, structural inequality in life-threatening contexts and critiques of techno-surveillance aside, I’m sure it must be maddening and othering to see convenience features advertised and lauded that never work for you.

Gee, can't see how this technology could be misused to incriminate some groups and exonerate others.

Hence, men if color beong falsely accused in some criminal cases due to an eyewitness seeing, and identifying the wrong person. Wrong identity results long prison time, and possibly death.

They should be lucky. Facial recognition is a horrifying idea. I don’t want to live in ‘Minority Report’ thanks.
