Because it's original and beautiful and Hollywood mostly makes crap nowadays.

No comparison. Creature from the black lagoon would be a better reference.

Do me a favor, watch the last 10 mins of #Splash, the only difference is #NYC, a kiss & she breathes underwater & they swim away 4 eternity! The bath, the salt, unable 2 communicate w words @ first, etc. #SameStory #DifferentFish

I just thought this was visually terrific and it moved me. It was like a fairy tale for adults. Splash is too saccharin for me. Shape of Water has an edge. And a beautiful title. But I take your point.

. . I watched the movie and... The story is not original. It's like a retelling of Beauty and the Beast but with a steampunk theme. Alternate title should have been "Falling in love with a creature of the Black Lagoon." . .

If you're looking for originality in storytelling and movies, you'll be disappointed most of the time. Most stories are a combination of multiple archetypes or a variation of perspective.

It's a fantasy story. It was ok, It was disjointed in spots, not well edited. I didn't find it spectacular like some of the other films up for an Oscar.
