On Monday morning, Doug Schifter, a livery driver in his early 60s killed himself with a shotgun in front of City Hall in Lower Manhattan. He was not a participant in the gig economy; he was a casualty of it.http://nyti.ms/2GRSuC9

I dont understand why cab companies didn’t (hurriedly) switch to the uber business model. They had a mature infrastructure of cabs and drivers while uber was still having growing pains. If you can’t beat them, become them. They could have crushed uber or at least competed.

Because they failed to adapt.. I have no sympathy for them.. they ran the cab companies like garbage because they were like a govt monopoly... and uber crushed them.. capitalism at work

Never taken a Lyft, Uber, any rideshare. Thought about it several times. Realized that their terms were totally exploitative of their drivers, backed out. The rideshare employees (if they're legally considered that yet) are not having a good time either.

leftists achieved their wet dream; between bloomberg’s awful reconfigurations and uber drivers, it’s virtually impossible to drive in manhattan. and now, for a trip into hell, you’ll be charged $12 when congestion pricing is approved. part of the plan.

Unfortunately for the Taxi workers, it won’t get better. Hard to see a future 10 years out where taxis still have drivers.

And soon the Uber and Lyft drivers will be replaced by automated cars... then where will those people go? Automation is going to take away many jobs, and mostly hit the blue collar workers the most.

Join the evolution or be left behind. That’s the reality of today technological transformation. Sorry for the loss of life but it will not change the course of innovation. It takes away income of 13000 and spread them out to 100000 people. Which number is larger?

The thing is that taxis operate as a monopoly, but drivers don't get the surplus income...companies do. As long as it's works this way, more cases like these Inés will appear...

Time and technology marches on..... adapt or not, your choice, but don't look to govt to protect an industry from competition. Besides, how many people working for Uber'd has this benifitted ? Uber drivers will eventually be replaced by self driving cars too.....

I have to agree with the Cabbies, we have allowed these private carriers to steal business that these folks have worked their entire lives to earn the right, but on the other hand, cabbies have let their industry go to hell.
