Breaking News: FBI offices in 3 cities were told that Larry Nassar had molested elite gymnasts. But nearly a year later, gymnastics officials became concerned about the slow pace of the case. During that time, over 2 dozen girls and women were molested.http://nyti.ms/2EChkoP

The New York Times has identified at least 27 girls and women who say that Dr. Nassar molested them between July 2015, when he first fell under FBI scrutiny, and September 2016, when he was exposed by an @IndyStar investigationhttp://nyti.ms/2GKIwSM

On July 27, 2015, USA Gymnastics officials contacted the FBI in Indianapolis. The next day, its chairman and its president met with FBI agents. 41 days had passed since USA Gymnastics first received the report of the sexual abuse of one of its charges.http://nyti.ms/2GKIwSM

Many girls and young women still seeing Dr. Nassar received no warning of the sexual assault allegations. Among them was Emma Ann Miller, now 15. She had about a dozen sessions with Dr. Nassar between the summers of 2015 and 2016, her lawyer said. http://nyti.ms/2GKIwSM pic.twitter.com/ZzDkMscPwD

“Whenever he asked if my lower back hurt, he would always find a way to touch me down there,” Emma Ann said, explaining that Dr. Nassar would say that her pelvis was in need of adjustment. http://nyti.ms/2GKIwSM pic.twitter.com/tYqO8hQ1J2

Emma Ann’s mother struggles with rage. “Look at what he did to my happy girl. Look at all the people who could’ve stopped him earlier. My goal is to find every single one of them in the haystack — expose them all, so this will never happen again."http://nyti.ms/2GKIwSM

People see this as an FBI issue but it’s not. Why didn’t the state medical board where he’s licensed to practice not suspend his ability to practice pending an investigation?

Right. The FBI investigates for crimes. The medical board is responsible for the safety of the patients in their respective states.

US Gymnastics officials need to be held accountable for this in some way. This could have been stopped much sooner :(

True . They must have child protection procedures in place as we do in the UK.

Don't speak too soon. USA Gymnastics probably do. The problem is that success and the old boys' club can get in the way of applying those, and using good judgment. You guys are hardly immune to those two phenomenons.

I was agreeing with you . But obviously something was lost in translation. Not at all immune to child protection issues but just surprised and sad for the children involved.

Ah yes, I see what you meant now - all in the interpretation of "must". That's why Twitter is the worst form of communication ever. This scandal is just the very worst. Not that we need to rank what's worst. It's not even an unusual story any more.
