While at Illinois in 2016 we almost began the process to adopt a new mascot, but the @Illinois_Alma adminstration is afraid of the financial backlash from donors. Chief supporters need to let the campus move on and not hold funding hostage. #ILL

I always felt that the Chief was a symbol, not a mascot. He never appeared on the sidelines of a game war hooping and doing goofy things with the fans and cheerleaders. Maybe a more dignified costume without the war paint would have saved him
-
He stood in the middle of the field or court while the Alma Mater- not a fight song- was sung. I think he was a symbol of honor. But I’m willing to admit that maybe I just don’t get it.
-
He did a fake war dance/gymnastics routine every single game.
-
Yes, he sure did.
-
I’m not disagreeing. I know that dance was an issue. Maybe if he had just stood there? I don’t know. I’m not saying that there weren’t offensive parts of his tenure.
