Why do quarterbacks say "hut?" We asked, and they had no idea. http://nyti.ms/2GEked0 pic.twitter.com/J5Nk85hURf

On the reals, I'm sure a linguist could explain it. Probably has to do with consonants that are easily heard and cut through external noise well.

Easy to pronounce and has a hard consonant sound on the end. Doesn't sound like any other common word and reduces confusion in a noisy or windy environment. Has many different possible inflections. Establishes command prior to snap.pic.twitter.com/oyDId21MYL

"Hut" is short for "Hike"... Now why "Hike" is used is the real question.

Maybe because of the nature of the game and in there it's like a war. So they may have borrowed it from armies that say the same, then it became tradition that quarterbacks follow without asking why. Like finding tradition in office and nobody knows why it's like that anyway.pic.twitter.com/XO848xSyil

Maybe this? An example of such elision is the command "Attention", which is usually uttered with the initial "a" hardly, if at all, audible, "ten" drawn out, and "tion" drastically shortened such that, in popular culture, the command often ends up being spelled "ten-hut".

Good thought. In my experience in the miltary though, one small difference I recall (Though I'm Canadian, maybe that makes a difference) is the 'Ah' part is actually quite audible, the 'ten' is very faint. That way you'd hear the 'Ah', and have time to react to the 'TION'
