This is tragic and a good example where passing a law is just the first little step to change. As with all badly functioning societies it's all about rebuilding from ground up and top down.

Old fashioned cultural habits and fundamentalism must be replaced with the tools of a modern society. A growing movement of people based around a few selected issues can be an important step getting changes started.

"Old fashioned cultural habits"? Like gang raping a mentally challenged girl out collecting firewood? They know it's wrong and they know they won't get caught. And if they do, apparently they just swear on a Quran they didn't.

Somalia has serious issues with rape and mistreatment of women. Laws are not being upheld, if they exist at all. This impunity and injustice can no longer be accepted. I pray tribute to the great work of Hawa Aden Mohamed. She is a national hero.!

Carefully thought through and adminsitrated support from outside forces is another tool necessary to create changes. Publicity on wrongdoings and open exchange of info about other ways of running societies and education to people are invaluable.
