interesting, aren't leading a satisfying life and happiness two different things? It's understandable young people are searching for something more to life than checking boxes. Empathy and putting others before self aka the golden rule are two good starting points.

A current positive psychology construct for "happiness" includes 3 factors: -presence of pleasurable experience -absence of unpleasurable experience -presence of meaningful experience (which may not necessarily be pleasant) The latter can get tagged "eudaimonia", per Aristotle.

Good to see Yale is following in Harvard’s footsteps. Dr. Stephanie Peabody teaches The Science and Application of Positive Psychology at Harvard’s Extension School. Highly recommend, life changing!

And Harvard followed Penn's Martin Seligman ... who built from work by Maslow at Columbia ... who recapitulated elements of contemplative practice traditions ... which have been with us since always.

I'm an old school, Buddhist contemplative (with a PhD in psych, and I give lectures in positive psych courses). I feel the current #Happiness movement is still "young," and can easily get over-commercialized. But there are (free) online resources, like: http://www.viacharacter.org/www/Character-Strengths-Survey …

Thank you so much. I tend to be more of a Taoist in my life. Always looking to see where the Tao will take me. 😊

1/ I've helped design a university Positive Psycholgy course, and I very much feel the field has a ways to go (e.g., to catch up with history's contemplative traditions).

2/ But those comments in this thread that are glibly critical of studies & practices to attend to and enhance life satisfaction appear neither well-informed nor well-intentioned. What else should education and social science be for, if not to attend to what matters most in life?

Positive psychology where students are held accountable for their own choices and state of mind daily are indeed valuable skills in any workplace. Happy workers tend to be more productive workers, and self accountability is always a good thing in any environment.

Happiness is fleeting, but joy is something we wake up and go to bed with daily. Joy can be found even when experiencing the trials of life.
