The developed world was pretty nice to its poor residents until the social program cuts in the '70's and '80's. Add to that the deregulation that changed moneymaking into wealth creation, helped by Reagan & Thatcher. Rampant capitalism re-emerged, and brought us here.

Unfortunately, poverty and its contradictions and problems are pretty obvious. There is a third world living in the very heart of the most powerful country in the world.

Yet the Democrats want open borders so millions more uneducated, low skilled, non-English speaking immigrants can live in tents.

Yet Republicans can't comprehend that those immigrants are harder workers, nicer people and speak English far better than the average Trump cultist. "Murica is not a word.

If they are all multilingual, nice, hardworking & superior to legal Americans, then why haven't they been successful in their own country & why haven't they made their country a better place? America!

This is exactly why it is accurate to say that the US economy is in the crapper.

Sure we can. Just declare poverty a national crisis at a press event, take a lot of pictures and then do nothing. Just like the opioid crisis. Voila! Problem solved!

The people defending these poverty stats by comparing their living standards to poor people in much, much poorer countries... That's a really low bar to set.

Deep poverty is a problem to be studied and solved on a case by case basis. Why in a country with such a large population like America this group of people slipped below the poverty line?
