I sat next to a blind person who's dog sat completely still and soundless under her seat for a 5 hour flight. When she ate and crumbs were literally falling on his nose, he didn't move. I have no problem with real service animals. The rise of "companion" pet's is a scourge.

As a 4 time raiser of dogs trained to be guide dogs, that is how it's supposed to be. The amount of time, money (and love) that goes into making a top tier service animal is extensive. The using of 'untrained pets' for this purpose is discouraging @GuidingEyes

Guide dogs are the gold standard to me. I've never encountered one that wasn't phenomenally well behaved. If the time and effort were taken to train a companion dog to that level, it wouldn't be a problem either. The problem is when the family pet just has the title slapped on.

Definitely. I don't have exact numbers, but maybe 50% of dogs bred to become guide dogs actual make it thru. Many released ones become other service dogs. Our first one become a bomb sniffing in NYC. Even released ones that become pets r usually well-behaved

It’s about time. Someone else’s desire to travel with their emotional support animal should not outweigh my ability to fly without breaking out in hives.

If it's truly an esa then the animal is an actual service animal. I have a dog that is currently in training to be my esa due to severe ptsd. Some people, like me, actually do require having their esa with them even on a flight. Abusing the system is not ok though.

It's a very challenging problem. I have severe allergies to dogs yet support service animals wherever they are needed. Some flights for service animals and some for those with allergies?

I know several people who abuse the system. It’s relatively easy to buy vests and get certificates for any dog. But taking advantage puts valid service animals’ access at risk. There should be oversight.

That's a shame! There should be an easier way to allow pets travel with their owners, then people wouldn't resort to abusing the system by claiming support animals. They must stop putting animals in cargo and back of plane crate, it emotionally scars animals.

It’s been getting out of control. Folks need to ask themselves if sitting in an aircraft next to someone’s untrained pet was worth their ticket price on a long flight?

"Untrained pet" do you know what a service dog or support animal is? It's not some 'untrained pet' 🤦🏻‍♂️

That’s the problem, people are claiming that untrained house pets are service animals. Delta is simply requiring additional documentation for service animals, not banning them outright.

I'm seeing animals claimed to be service/support dogs. They are totally untrained & certainly not service/support animals. Planes, trains, buses need to require a certificate indicating dogs are actually service/support dogs. I speak from experience on a train ride...

Exactly, I think they should go back to making the owners have their service dogs wear the vests and have the medallions on their collars.
