As a primary care provider, we knew to test for this in 2007. In 2009, most insurance companies stopped covering the test for primary prevention. They only pay for it after a person has had a heart attack or stroke.

Classic insurance move. Unfortunately the article paints this as a new finding. Having worked cardiac rehab for 18 years we know it's not new but insurance coverage strikes again in it's infinite wisdom of covering stroke care rather than preventative screen. Ugh.

I am thankful to have a cardiologists that tests me for the lipoprotein a but we desperately need to push through new drugs in development, raise awareness to insurance companies and make existing drugs more available.
