Great for those in China. But these "instruments" are making their way into schools in the US where they won't play in tune, won't withstand normal wear and tear and cause parents looking for a deal to lose money. Not to mention frustration from kids who can't get a good sound.

Here's the problem: Those $100+ saxophones being sold here aren't any good...and parents of young middle school players here are seeing the price tag, buying them & quitting early because of the poor quality. $100 saxophones are what you see on eBay for a non-brand name. 1/

It's good to see my instrument become popular there...but the quality of horn they are putting out right now doesn't hold up, and a lot of companies are making money by shipping those horns over here and selling to parents who think "a horn is just a horn." It hurts long run. 4/

Furthermore, some of the companies in China have it set up to where the only way you can play on the mouthpieces that come with their horns is with a specific brand of reed they make. If you attempt to use Vandoren, D'Addario or other reed brands, you won't get a sound. 3/

To get even a good quality used professional horn, you are going to have to spend $2000-2500 usually. Brand-new Selmer, Yamaha or Yanigasawa models for alto run north of $3500 at LEAST. I've had students play on the $100 horns...and they are both out of tune & have weak metal. 2/

(And am I the only one who finds the explanation that they don't study jazz because it's "too hard" to be kind of putting themselves down? Promoting traditional Chinese music through the saxophone is great, but you can do that AND take a chance on understanding jazz.) 5/
