It's more expensive in the U.S. because all the other countries have a single payer system and they negotiate the price with the makers. But since our government is paid off by drug makers, we don't have single payer health care that would give us the power to negotiate prices.

Switzerland is not single payer. In fact, voters rejected a proposal for it in 2014. Their system looks a lot like the ACA.
-
Ok, but do they get to negotiate their drug prices? That's what I'm getting at. We can't, so we are the last bone for the drug dogs to chew on. We cover the cost of all the counties that do.
-
Not negotiation. Switzerland sets a price cap based on comps to prices elsewhere, also considers effectiveness. Here is background from NYT and update from Swissinfo: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/09/opinion/the-solution-to-drug-prices.html …https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/health-check_government-to-resume-drug-pricing-controls/42277762 …

So you are telling me they have some form of price control. And if we could do the same thing our insurance would probably be a whole lot cheaper. Right?
-
Yes. The Swiss health care system has often been lauded by conservatives because it isn’t single payer. Well, drug price caps are part that system.

Per
@AliVelshi &@SRuhle, Switzerland has universal care with private insurance. Stephanie pointed out Switzerland population is same as New York City. May not scale up but we should be open to fact based discussions on how to make health care a right.#BlueWave2018

For-profit anything involves shareholders. Shareholders run the show and you want to know that they're looking for profit. Health Care has to be Universal and not for profit.

Medical and health services, including medicines are in most part much cheaper in South Africa (I am South African). The industry is heavily regulated by government, in favour of patients, as it should be.

My child was unable to walk because of an arthritis flare. Rather than wait for our insurance to approve Humira, I said I would pay for it. One injection was more than my whole paycheck! Heartbreaking Moment when I left empty-handed.

Pharmaceutical patents get expropriated (confiscated) if big pharma doesn't sell at "reasonable" prices to state-run medical systems in non-US countries. It's sell-cheap-or-else-we-take. Cut them out of our patent system if they won't pay full price.

This is old news. Drugs cost more in US because we stupidly let drug companies advertise their drugs, instead of simply informing the medical community. Their US advertising budget dwarfs their R&D budget, and we get to pay the price.

Y R drug discounts n rebates given to insurance companies and not final consumers? Why does US (bush law) forbid price negotiation?

Just like tax scam; payback to campaign contributors of large donations.
