Some airlines charge an extra $150 each way for unaccompanied minors to fly. @ronlieber asks why.http://nyti.ms/2qzlzyb

I was on a United flight sitting near an UM. True story, the flight attendant told ME to watch him and let her know if he needed something🙄🙄🙄

No explanation needed. They lobbied Congress to de-regulate the airline industry. The end.

Just get yourself an ill-fitting "emotional support" vest for the dog and you're golden.

It costs the airline an extra $150 for an attendant to walk by your child a few times to make sure it's still there.

Both my kids have found it pretty easy to fly unaccompanied below the airlines' stated age limits.

How do you do that practically? You just show up and send em through TSA at age 13 on Delta and nobody bats an eye?

Give TSA what it wants (a boarding pass and no ID for kids under 18 and a confident, compliant traveler) and the airline what it wants (a boarding pass and a confident, non-troublesome passenger).

"My wife and I probably would have told her to stay rather than trying to find a hotel room late at night." Well, that's good, because I'm pretty sure most hotels don't rent rooms to 12-year-olds.

The 1st time I ever flew was alone as a 12 YO on American from JFK to LAX in 1962. Basically no one paid any attention to me on the flight, no one asked if I was being met (I was). The fare was $321 round trip. Times have changed.

Last July my son had an overseas trip on United. Despite the UAM fee AND both of us having TSA PRE and my 1K status we weren’t allowed to use the quick way thru security! Nearly missed the flight. Ridiculous!!Also UAL no longer allows UAM travel for trips with connections.

Because that's a lot of responsibility to put on the airline.
