Opinion: It’s great that progressive prosecutors are against incarceration, but alternative punishments shouldn’t cause people to go brokehttp://nyti.ms/2ApJYFQ

There are three categories of crime IMO: 1. Fund raisers - speeding, jaywalking, broken taillight, etc = means tested 2 BS crimes - marijuana possession = it shouldn’t be illegal 3. Real crime = it should be painful for the guilty

Offers intelligent solutions. 1st-marijuana needs to be legal NATIONWIDE! Safer than alcohol & tobacco. Alcohol prohibition failed & so the War on Drugs. Stupid LAWS need changing. Rapists set free to make room for pot smokers?

I don't think you'll find a lot of support here @nytimes. However, what about community service, rather than fines, just to add something (hopefully) constructive?

So, we should just let them off with no punishment then? Like Kathryn Steinle's murderer then? You lot are a joke.

It's a use tax. Same as cigs and gas, but those commodities are legal. Why should I pay for it? I'm not a user.

You're not (generally) a user of the penal system yet you pay for that, too.

Bad decision making has consequences . Don't do the crime if you can't do the time or pay the fine.

Uhh, have you ever paid a speeding ticket? Minimum $150. Shouldn’t the monetary punishment (ie fine) be more for more serious crimes?

Why would we not charge the very people that break the law, for the cost incurred in enforcing the law? Why should law-abiding citizens, cover the majority of the cost? NYT, your current opinion sucks.
