The New York Times's chief art critics, Holland Cotter and @robertasmithnyt, say the Met's new pay policy is a big mistake. It should be open to all.http://nyti.ms/2E5HcYA

Massive mistake. I am a resident, I always pay something when I go, but a trip to the museum for a family of four non-residents would cost $100.00. That is putting the museum out of reach for many.

Cannot recommend it enough. It is a once in a lifetime chance to see hundreds of collected sketches and works and it is very well curated.

They should sell short visit tickets. Crazy to pay $25 to swing by for 30 min on a walk (which I do when visiting NYC and I don’t have time or inclination for a long museum visit).

Time to look into reciprocal museum memberships that apply to the Met.

It IS open to all. Please let there be a small advantage to the people who live in this city and support with our tax dollars. And frankly, let’s reduce the crowds a bit...

Plus I thought a condition of the Met taking parts of Central Park for expansion was on the condition of keeping a suggested admission fee

Bloomberg negotiated a new agreement with The Met just before he left office that authorized a mandatory fee.

I believe they have the right to charge New Yorkers a fee as well, and so it's only a matter of time until they do.

Yes Bloomberg did that right before he left office and I’m sure they will eventually charge NYers too. It’s so wrong since its on a lot of public land

I'm an art lover. However, I don't spend hours at a museum, trying to see everything, or even the greatest hits. I go to the Met, spend maybe an hour in one section. Go back a few days later, do the same. This policy will keep me out entirely.
