Speaking as a year over year supporting member of the Met, this saddens me deeply. In a year that sees the biggest yet in federal give-aways to the haves, this is a depressing removal of access for the have-nots. The shared benefits of our civil society are rapidly eroding.

I heard it well stated recently here in MA as this, "There is no more common wealth in the Commonwealth."

Yikes - I'm sure they used to ask you to pay whatever you wanted to. An amazing museum - sad that those who cannot afford to pay won't experience it.
-
It's still free\pay what you want for people who live in New York.
-
I'm from South Africa - I'm from as out of town as you get :) If I ever scrape up the money to visit NY again - I'd love to see the Met, Guggenheim etc again. But the rand/dollar rate is crazy!!
-
But if you can afford to get to NY you can afford a museum ticket.
-
Let’s not be elitist. That’s $25 per person so $100 for a family of four. For most families, that’s a stretch.
-
A huge stretch
-
I drive in from Boston. Costs me $20 for a tank of gas and I stay with friends. $25 is steep when I used to be able to donate $5 and have an affordable weekend away.

I think that is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard. I am a member and will seriously reconsider that choice as I do not live in NYC.
@metmuseum -
Really? Are you a member at the Whitney Museum of Art also? They charge.
-
No I am not, but the Metropolitan is in city buildings. The Whitney is not. And no, I haven't been to the MOMA since they started charging. Art needs to be free. Think of DC where you can go from museum to museum for FREE.
-
I paid a LOT to go to the smithsonian museums/zoo.. bc I live in Maine and had to travel and lodge. Had no idea the museums were free and was prepared to pay admission...
-
You paid to go to DC. The choice of lodgywas yours. If the museums and monuments cost 25 each You probably would have gone somewhere else.

The CSI "museum" isn't a part of the Smithsonian museums. It's more a tourist trap and definitely for-profit.

David Koch paid for a big fountain out front with his name on it. I give the fountain the middle finger every time I visit. Yes, underwriting admissions would be a much better use for his ill-gotten gains, but you dont get to put you name on those!
-
Same here. I've felt creepy about the Met since those Koch fountains went in. Ugh. Way to price out visitors - NYC is expensive enough as it is. Many tourists will forego the Met experience, which is sad.
-
It’s give a donation if you can here in
#SantaBarbara and one free day a month so at least low income families can educate children.#TheMet is a treasure. Something needs to come through for them#ArtIsLife
