        I'd say the seige at Khe Sanh had the inadverent effect of distracting the media from the buildup of Viet Cong in the south, but it could also be argued that if Khe Sanh had fallen it could have functioned as the American version of Dien Bien Phu.

        Of course it was . The Viet Cong were justified in fighting against the occupying forces of their country. Their struggle was born out of an anti-colonial fight for independence and tens of thousands of poor and exploited Americans died for nothing fighting them.
