New York's subway system is the largest transportation network in the U.S. But it doesn't feel that way to the people it leaves behind.http://nyti.ms/2E3R1XU

Umm...wasn't the subway system there BEFORE the people it "left behind"? They chose to live in underserved neighborhoods and now the Times is complaining they are underserved?!?

I don’t think anyone chooses to be priced out of accessible neighborhoods. I’m guessing you’re not very familiar with NYC neighborhoods and rents (not to even mention housing purchase prices). It’s become unaffordable for the middle class and below.

I'm familiar. You're not wrong, but you're tweeting about a different issue. I'm responding to the Times article that seems to assume you can move subway tunnels according to demographic or interest group preferences.

Right. Because that works so very well for the elderly, the disabled, and in snow. Good thinking, mate. Solved it.

Granted, disabled NEED better pub-trans options, but snow? RLY? If we can ride bikes to work in upstate NY (>10ft snow/yr), u can do it in NYC (bonus - it's cheap!)

Granted, some people could bike more. Many do. But getting from certain places in Queens, for example, you'd be daft to bike. No bike lane or even space along road, high traffic, you'd get crushed in an underpass. In a better world our cities would be designed for it.

This is why I’ve stopped commiserating with Manhattanites about the MTA. Bronx travel means no late/weekend trains, endless shuttle buses, long waits, isolated neighborhoods/lines, more delayed travel than not, and no cost effective alts (like Via).

Don't even cry. NYC has infrastructure that puts every other city in the US to shame. The bridges alone are amazing.

Worth noting that in the pre-MetroCard days, those of us in "two-fare zones" (who needed a bus to subway) didn't get a free transfer and had to pay twice.
