It took Netflix more than 3 years to reach a million subscribers. Hulu did in 10 months. MoviePass did it in 4.http://nyti.ms/2pIJw5t

Same with Hulu...which didn’t even offer subscriptions until a few years after being founded. This is classic tech PR hype - should have been challenged with a reality check by the writer at the NYTimes.

Netflix laid the foundation for streaming. Being first, came with customer education.

Many people don't understand how challenging it is to be the first -- to establish a model, to change consumer behavior.

Exactly! Even worse, it’s not right to compare those who follow and did not establish the industry. Much much easier road to travel when orders have done laid the foundation

Moviepass is a train wreck. The app is awful and they weren’t prepared for the volume of new users after the Costco deal. I pay for a service i can’t use. Who is running the company, ja rule?

I haven't had a single problem with mine. I've probably seen 30 movies since October with it. Not saying your experience isn't real, just that it isn't typical. I know 5 people with it and none have problems. I'm going today and tomorrow lol.

Look at their Twitter activity, every tweet is blown up by angry users who can’t use the product. Everything would be solved with a modicum of customer support. Most have been waiting weeks without a response, and this isn’t delayed cards, it’s app errors. @MoviePass

Yeah, but Moviepass will go belly up in less than a year. My 2 sons got it for Decemner because they are home from college and there are lots of movies to see. They will cancel after a month. December will cost the dearly.

and also keep in mind the CEO of MoviePass is a co-founder of Netflix & Redbox. He's done this before. Twice.

The Dollar Shave Club model - undercut existing players while losing tons of money while hoping to get bought at some point. Absurd that @nytimes isn’t smart enough to get that. Plus they “hope” to break even at some point & make money selling data? This isn’t a 1999 dotcom.

Didn't Follar Shave Company get bought for $1 billion? Maybe I'm missing the point here.

Yes. They were bought for a large amount of money. The point: they never had a valid “build a company” business. Investors put up huge sums to buy customers away from big players - forcing someone to purchase them. Without the buyout, they never had a chance. Ala dotcom boom.

Is Netflix a valid company? Prior to net neutrality being turned back, the co loses $2bn per annum in eFCF (this number will grow now). Where's the model in that? Point being, as long as there are believers that will continue to recapitalize the model, it's a going concern.

No disagreement. They recently raised our rates again. With all these they have three options: Get sold for big $; Evolve to a real business; or ebb and fade into oblivion as so many have in the past...

Honest: it depends. If they're selling themselves as a measurement tool, if there's somehow value in the data thy get from their sub base, they become a de facto Nielsen or CommScore. However, I admit, that model feels dubious.
