My god. What a question to ask in this enconmy with the system rigged toward part time, low paying, no benefits jobs. Do you think most parents have a choice?!?!?

Kids don't become independent when you flip a switch, no matter their age. You have to start early, in an age-appropriate way. Parents in this tight spot generally didn't.

I will help my children & grandchildren as long as I’m able. Not so they won’t have to be independent & self sustaining. Simply because it gives me joy. Material possessions & Social standing does not matter to me. I am no longer able to travel. I enjoy my life & my family.

This question seems ok only for Americans. Money is valued more than their own children. Forget about the fact that if you are asking this question is bc you know you failed to give your children the tools to survive.

Why not teach and empower them to stand on their own, but provide support when needed, rather than brow beating them into being victims and then blaming them for it

A parent's job is to teach their children to be self-sufficient. You can't do that by supporting them into adulthood. What happens when you can't do it anymore?

Our children are gifts from heaven. No two are alike and we need to support them as long as they need us, depending on their lives' circumstances. It's our job to guide them toward independence but, alas, there is no manual for success.

The best parenting advice I ever received was’ we have to teach our kids to be able to think for themselves and to be independent “ .Make sure they study something in college that will always be in demand ! Help them until they stand on their own feet.

There is no such thing that will “always be in demand”. The majority of majors are in business, and everyone mocked those grads for being “little more than baristas”.

Exactly right. If you are loved and supported, independence is a breeze!
