Taiwan is proof that a country can make a swift and huge change to its health care system, even in the modern dayhttp://nyti.ms/2zyO0vh

Both my parents passed away in the past year: my dad stage 4 lung cancer & my mom autoimmune disease. Treatments were intense & expensive. We were sad that in the end we lost them. But we were grateful they received state of art medical care and we're not laden with medical debt

The final bill for my dad's battle vs cancer was less than USD$5K, a bit more for my mom because of the experimental drugs administered. As we grappled with our grief, I was made acutely aware of the difference between having a working single payer system vs "good luck with that"

Sorry for your losses ❤️ THIS is exactly why the US would benefit from handling health care differently

Taiwan is a country by any modern definition except diplomatic recognition--and Taiwan is doing amazingly even without that.

“Single Payer” is a euphemism for Socialized Medicine... which is socialism for healthcare. Bad news for patients. Great news for Gov’t officials.

How many countries that have some form of single payer are moving away from it due to dissatisfaction?

There is indeed a lot to learn from foreign, government-run single-payer systems. From Canada to the United Kingdom and even Scandinavia, single-payer systems have proven cripplingly expensive even as they limit patients’ ability to access quality care.

That’s a good description of the US system, if it can even be called that. I’m in an online cancer support group with a large international presence. People from other countries are aghast at the dysfunction of our health care delivery.

Now that's a good one! "their" system is cripplingly expensive. LOL Holy smokes.

When USA was setting its Constitution,Taiwan did not exist as a country or "country".Healthcare existed at the time.Founders did NOT make it a duty of the Federal Gvt. So it can't ever be unless we change said Constitution. As USA is country of Laws&not banana republic like Taiwan

@nytimes I see a lot of people arguing over whether Taiwan is a country and in the usual trolls dissing single payer but has anyone actually clicked the link? I tried it and it took me to a story about the Pope.

I lived in Taiwan for a year. When my boss brought me to see the doctor, in a local office, that was also in a pharmacy, I was dumbfounded. Also walked into a Taipei hospital and had a mole removed in one afternoon. I don’t speak Chinese. That was a fun afternoon.
