Layoffs are stunning steelworkers who, just a year ago, greeted Trump’s election as a new dawn for their industryhttp://nyti.ms/2zhE0q5

Having worked for the USWA years ago, watched in amazement when people I thought were pretty smart bought into the Conman's BS. Feel sad for them but will never understand ANYONE believing Trump.

Thing is though, they bought into his fake promises of both helping themselves AND hurting minorities. Hard to be compassionate when they were more than happy to vote to harm others who struggle.

The town this is happening in went for Hillary by 30 points though. I don't know how many of the people laid off actually voted for Trump; NYT may be playing that up because of the whole "Steel Mill" thing.

I agree. NYTimes and the media in general is oddly invested in this narrative.

Turns out the Steelworkers Union endorsed Hillary, so between that and Conshohocken voting Hillary over Trump by a 2-to-1 margin, a majority of the people getting laid off probably voted for Hillary. Yet they're getting such vitriol thanks to misleading NYT article.

USW headquarters is located in Pittsburgh, PA. During 2016 election positive comments about both Clinton & Trump came from the hdqts, which seemed to embolden some rank & file to campaign for Trump. No idea how the vote split, but city went heavily for Clinton.

Either way, this is the stuff Trump crowed about: Saving American Industry Jobs! Steel! Coal! Also, AT&T gave bonuses but are laying off. And Carrier is laying off 300. Don't hear him talking about that, do we?

I read an article recently about how those job retraining programs are barely utilized. The laid-off workers would rather wait for their job to come back.

No sympathy. These dumbasses had all evidence in front of them pre-election that Trump was a con. They voted for greed and bigotry anyway.
