hmm, cause the government doesn't require PTC to be installed for another couple of years so they won't until the last minute because without government oversight and regulation they care more about $$$ than safety. Signed, wife of a rail worker.

Why not use a GPS-based system installed on each train, which limits speed based on location? Wouldn’t this be inexpensive and simple to install? Seems there should be a much cheaper solution available now.

you should be asking more about why conductors and engineer unions fought PTC implementation even though it can't replace their jobs. And why large rails, ahem @UnionPacific fought implementation of PTC for so long.

Just that the technology has been there for years and the major freight lines (UP mostly) battled implementing PTC as did conductors and engineers who for some reason thought PTC would take their jobs even though it isn't an auto pilot, just redundant safety measure.

been prevented had these trains installed and used PTC at the earliest possible chance instead of waiting till they had to. Regulation vs. free market. Free market will always delay safety implementations due to $$$

Amtrak is not, but Union Pacific, BNSF, Norfolk Southern etc, are and they are the ones who are responsible for creating the data that makes PTC work on the back end as Amtrak mostly runs on tracks they own and they've been pressuring the govt to extend deadline for...
