Algorithms have proven record leading to release of criminals who will immediately return to the criminal activity (e.g. domestic abuse). Why did NYTimes get so sucked into this? Shiny bauble syndrome - if it's tech it must be good?

Algorithms are canned decisions processes based on assumptions that somebody made in the past, include embedded preferences and biases.
