Actually, it depends on where you watched the movie. Not even joking here.

What at the stroke of midnight did the empire stop being Space Nazis?

They were presented as Space American Capitalists, when the movie was shown in the USSR. Luke was a proletariat hero. And, you know...we all cheered for the capitalists. @EmeraldOmega

So the communists changed the name for the Empire for propaganda. The Empire is still obvi Nazi SS inspired no matter the name, they are still the bad guys. Who is "we"? Are you saying you cheered for the empire when watching them blow up planets?

And no, they didn't change the name - they just said (in critic reviews, censorship bureaus and such) that all the bad things it did, obviously represented what the Americans would be, in Space. And that Luke was a proletariat hero. Look, USSR was weird. :D

I dont understand your point though Luke was the still the hero. The empire was still the bad guys.

My original post was obviously a joke. Look, all I meant was to poke fun at how Soviet cinemas had to interpret the movie to censors, to they could show it. :D (Also, people used to say that Empire was basically USSR, just more humane, with better services)

As I recall the rebellion wasn’t blowing up planets, just to prove that they could. Seems pretty simple.
