I live in Toronto and our subway system the @TTCnotices closes lines on the weekends to deal with repairs and it's never for long periods of time. There is consistent maintenance.

Problem is that NYC has 4x the population & a 24/365 economy. Shutting down lines is a major disruption to city & economy.
-
Sorry but your population stats are incorrect. The Greater Toronto Areas has 6 million people. Shutting down lines is a mjor disruption here as well. A delay of 15 mins is a huge disruption as well.

There is hope New York - under Andy Byford's guidance, the Toronto subway went from being a horrific, incompetently managed dumpster fire, to almost, kind of not bad.
-
That, made me laugh

Replacing the signal system is the most important job for the MTA. And that will require shutting down entire lines. It has to be done eventually, or it will be done catastrophically.

Voluntarily or involuntarily.

If the city slept, this would make sense.

New Yorkers are not at all like Torontonians that would accept such a thing. The backlash will be significant. Andy can't push new Yorkers around like he did in Toronto. No chance
-
Give me a break. Nobody got “pushed around.” Byford has done what absolutely needed doing. And there’s still more to do. Infrastructure must be maintained and replaced or you’ll lose it for good.
-
Brad, I get the fact that you can't say anything negative about your employer & you want to keep good relations with Andy as paths may cross again, but truth be told, it takes over 1 hr most weekdays to get from Dundas-Finch due to "restricted speed zones", been ongoing all 2017

I give Byford full credit for making massive improvements to the TTC, however communication about delays remains a huge problem.

Its a necessary evil. I am sure there are traffic pattern opportunities for shut downs as well as alternatives that can be put in place to modernize the system to improve efficiencies. Just needs to be a well@discussed/vetted plan w/ appropriate alternatives. Good luck w/ that

Thank God I moved out of NYC. The subways were straight outta 1970. Esp compared to London, Tokyo, and literally the whole world.
