In America, we are a land of opportunity. Anybody can earn a living if they put in the work. Welfare is a tool used to support the lower class, but it should never have turned into an entitlement. Americans are not entitled, we are ambitious.

Many of the extreme poor are elderly, mentally/physically challenged or children. A decent society cares for these people.

You do know that the red states have far more people on welfare than the blue ones, right?

Some do. Some don't. Most states are a mixed bag once you factor in things like public housing. I do know that my state, calif., far outspends any otber st. when it comes to food stamps for instance

Too many make self-serving and simplistic judgments on this complex issue. Dependence results from ignorance & disability. Health care & education are the key to solving this issue, yet are left out of this dialogue and shortchanged in public funding.

This ain't the fifties. Many jobs don't even offer benefits anymore, or a pension. Leaving the "employed" to ask for help or work 18 hours a day to make ends meet, but they're lazy and should just suck it up right?

@nytegan As always, Timothy Egan gets to the point. Trump's "Tale of Two Cities" act is a sideshow for his only intention: to enrich himself & others like him. But hope remains: the elections in 2018. What is done can be undone.

Most want to get off drugs and alcohol and have a normal life but of course rehab in this country is extremely expensive. We have plenty of homeless vets with PTSD who need help, too.

at one point or another, they had to make a CHOICE to do drugs. You cant save the world, you cant save every homeless person, you cant save every drug addict, you cant be a parent to all. Canada has free healthcare.... they still have hobos and drug addicts. Most of them choose.
