The pain ultimately eases, almost without you noticing it. But it still slaps back. http://nyti.ms/2BVDhwz  This was one of our most popular stories on social media this year.

another bitter thing and and matter of great guilt is when an animal disappears - even if death is natural some day you'd better not let a pet die in pain and you have to share its last moments. this is impossible when it disappears as my coonie athos did this summer..pic.twitter.com/XX2TkFAJo9

This made me cry. I lost my dog Ralph to a brain tumor too. I could have written the same story. He was my constant through tumultuous times and even though it’s been four years now, every now and again the pain grabs me by the throat. I miss him. I always will.

Ok I’m crying now. Missing my sweet Ned Biscuit who left this earth in 2012. I’ve adopted 2 dogs since then. I love them both but there will only ever be 1 Ned Biscuit. ❤️

"She was the metronome to my life." I experienced the most intense grief that I'd ever known when my little dog died in August of 2016. Yes, the anguish does ease with time ( and grief work ) but my love for her remains undimmed. A wonderful article . . . Thank you.

I was surprised to find myself more upset when Max died then when my own mom died. When I got another dog a year later I still call him Max every once in a while like an old man forgetting their grandkids name
