A white couple adopted a black girl and then returned her for a white daughter. This is what happened when the 2 women met, decades later.http://nyti.ms/2jsdYLx

Oh, jeez, people. Read the article. It happened in the 50s and assumptions need to be left at the door. Interesting story.

Ms. Smith got lucky having been adopted by a good family. Most of these cases the kids end up in foster care, adopted for the tax breaks & abused. The 50’s don’t make it okay, these are people. It’s easy to judge when you haven’t been through the adoption or foster system.

I fully agree! It doesnt’t matter WHEN this happened but THAT it EVER happened! The psychological damage done to a child is enormous, the loss of trust, the feeling of abandonment and worthlessness.

Yep. And to say “it was a different time” is essentially saying that it’s justified. It’s never justified & the system need a complete overhaul. The amount of abuse & psychological damage is astronomical & it’s been going on for years.

Tell the parents who returned her that. Their the ones treating her like she's not human. I don't get your reaction, angry at the wrong people.

i really encourage anyone interested to read the article. nyt's titles have been very vague and misleading lately, but this story is definitely one to check out. it ended quite well

Because some kids are assholes. I have a friend who was an asshole as a kid, and still is. If you adopt a kid, your fairly well off, but the random kid is too much to handle or will amount to nothing, then it is you RIGHT to offer your time/money/wisdom to someone more deserving.

Interesting story. It’s a shame the headline has stopped so many from reading. It is quite eye opening. The expectation that Ms Smith would have had the worse life and the reality of the unsafe conditions for a black person in a white community in the 50s.
