There was a time, like 40 years ago, when woman would not have been believed and would have been vilified.

That time was still in effect last year

that time is still in effect today
-
True. I was trying to be generous since some of us are finally being believed.

Meryl Streep said in an interview IN 1979 that Hoffman groped her. In 1979. No one did anything. If they did nothing when Meryl Streep came forward, how impossible would it be for a woman who was not a world renowned actress to be heard? Women came forward. No one listened.

You know what's a really good way to keep women and men from coming forward 10, 20, 30, 40 years after the fact and claiming that you've assaulted them? DON"T ASSAULT THEM

A person who has been sexually assaulted owns that story and will tell it in their own time. She or he does not owe the abuser the courtesy of speaking out when it is convenient for the abuser. Because that would be never.

I’m not supporting Hoffman but this sort of railroading, kangaroo court questioning should be saved for a real courtroom. If it is too late then sadly NEITHER party can prove guilt or innocence.
-
I’m not sure where the idea comes from that the courts are the arbiters of whether and when we’re allowed to call out people’s shitty behavior, or that social opprobrium can only be applied to individuals after a jury’s conviction.
-
The question is whether we are willing to sacrifice even one person wrongfully accused for the greater good in order for change. That one person would never be able to clear their name. I in no way support the behaviours of the past & I do think change will & is happening. 2/2
-
Probabilities aside, this concern has to be mediated by the relative power of the individuals involved. This isn’t a case of the powerful railroading the powerless. Dustin Hoffman is a millionaire many times over, and has every one of the tools of the powerful at his disposal.
-
Would you defend a male wrongfully accused so vehemently if they were penniless or if I showed you a picture of Heidi Klum groping a workmate's backside (probably in jest) would you support her even though she has money & power? You obviously have your opinion and I have mine.
-
It’s abundantly clear that you never bothered to even look at the Hoffman allegations Oliver referred to. His behavior occurred in front of others on and off set, she documented it contemporaneously, shared it with her sister contemporaneously, and still has copies.
-
Nobody is suggesting that the power of the state be wielded against him, only that he is not entitled to have accounts of his shitty behavior toward others kept secret.
-
And the idea that any human being can and should go through life never allowing themselves to act on any information about others that hasn’t resulted in a successful court case is, quite simply, insane.

I think it's naive for Oliver to think women wouldn't lie about that. There has been proof that women do. The Duke Lacrosse allegations for one. That means not ALL women tell the truth about it.
-
I think lying is the exception to the rule, but your point is well taken.
-
Definitely exception BUT we need to focus on IMMEDIATE reporting. From this point on, no more 30 years later accusations. Change culture!
-
How about we change the culture that blames women for being assaulted or harassed first?
-
Did I blame women?
-
No, she's saying the culture blames women.
