A dying man had “do not resuscitate” tattooed on his chest. Doctors said it “produced more confusion than clarity.”http://nyti.ms/2AplAHW

How can it be confusing? It says Do not resuscitate.”

Very easily, if there are no legal documents filled, if they don't, they can be sued. Not very hard to figure out. P.S. It was explained in the article.

I used to be a Trauma RN. We all swore we’d have this tattooed on our chests.

Funny thing is we will have to do the “Do Not Resuscitate” and add “I mean it”

The case study on this says, "We initially decided not to honor the tattoo, invoking the principle of not choosing an irreversible path when faced with uncertainty.” I love everything about that.http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1713344?af=R&rss=currentIssue&#iid=f01 …

No, this is not a legal DNR. Any paramedic or nurse would be legal obligated to resuscitate.

Here’s the problem. If he was unconscious, then whoever even BROUGHT him to the hospital didn’t read it either. When you come into the hospital, we have some duties. Things need to be clear as glass because of attorneys.

For sure ! It is neither a dying Will, nor a living Request. Doctor's job is to save lives, and this writing tattooed on his chest is not legally a Will, so doctors are bound to be confused. They should do their job & this man might have said ' Thanks" if he had lived after.

Only he could have told his intentions correctly, but the doctors were put in a quandary of uncertainty by this writing. No one wants to die - not even a dying man. Emotions and reality are never on same track. The doctors have the job of saving lives sans emotions.
