We don't bow down to the church anymore. We're merely cultural Catholics ie we like to partake in rites of passage events. Baptism/Christening, communion, confirmation Weddings and Funerals. Ireland is now a liberal modern open tolerant soceity. It's not quite equitable tho

I agree with you about individual Catholics. We have some amazing heroes in Ireland such as Fr. Peter McVerry, who works with homeless youth. However, as an organisation it's hard to call the RC Church in Ireland left-wing, I can tell you! Women have no say for one thing.

Yes, organised religion in Ireland has a long history of patriarchy/misogyny. And proto-fascism - Blue Shirts and Orange Order! I'd prefer a complete separation between church and state, especially in the provision of education/healthcare.

Irish citizens largely want change, but the government does not want to offend any of its more conservative supporters and won't act in line with the will of the people to separate church and state.

So there is a correlation between believing fanciful fairy tales and believing authoritarian, plutocratic politicians? Who’d have thought. Good to see critical thinking is on an upswing.

And that is necessarily a bad thing? The US has moved sharply to the right and is becoming far more ‘religious’ and you can see where that’s getting them!

It seems from the outside that the most immoral people in the US are the most religious. Current government taking from the poor to line the pockets of the rich; people tooled up with weapons that kill other human beings & a massive number of gun deaths every year? Christian?!
