Our profile of a Nazi sympathizer in Ohio elicited significant criticism from readers. Our national editor weighs in.http://nyti.ms/2BdW6L9

How NOT to apologize: "We regret the degree to which the piece offended so many readers." Instead try, "We regret the way in which we wrote this article, which was tone deaf and poorly considered."

This "apology" from NYT is as poorly conceived as the article. It came across as "we didn't mean to normalize him but except for his extreme racist ideas he acts like a pretty normal person". Isn't that the definition of normalizing?

I'm also not a big fan of the "at least we started an important conversation" part of that article either. Please, with that, NYT.

The important issues were never addressed. What goals do Nazis have and by what means do they plan to achieve those goals? What will be the effect on the nation's demographics during & after? When will they use force? Why should we permit this? Who has authority to regulate them?

I've been in this argument several times with "racial purists". They generally have little to offer in response. The examples I do receive counter their otherwise self-proclaimed limited government ideals.

Weak weak weak. I think you and my money/subscription need a time out. Justifying your work here is admitting to a moral equivalency that does not exist and should not exist.

Took me 45 minutes and two separate “customer service” reps. They’ve made it as difficult as possible to cancel.

Put a stop on the charge on your credit card. When it declines and they want to know why you didn’t renew you get a chance to tell them

All you need to do to gauge the impact of this article is to go to Mr. Hovater's Facebook page and observe the slew of Nazi sympathizers who have now found a new hero in their online community. This piece did not enlighten. It simply united hate.
