Might this also have to to with the cost of undergraduate, med school, residency, the ability to study without having to work, being a lot more likely to be feasible if your parent is pulling down a doctor's salary?

I work at a med school. Children of doctors know what a hard career it is from observing their parents, which is why they make good candidates. No illusions.
