why doesn't this surprise me, the War on Drugs has failed in every possible way since 1971, made millions miserable, so of course POTUS expands it to floating prisons....awesome <sigh>

The Coast Guard does NOT have floating prisons, anyone who says that is lying, Yes people are held on board until there sent back to there home country or brought to the US for trial.

#Breaking @nytimes & @USATODAY learn about maritime law on the high seas for the first time as it sees how the U.S. Coast Guard engages in longstanding practices of international common law.

The reporting here by @nytimes & @USATODAY is from the standard Western imperialist point-of-view which presupposes that U.S. law and Western legal precedents are what should apply on the high seas; i.e. that the U.S. owns the high seas and U.S. Law applies. Check that privilege!

Lastly I would ask how do you define a "Low Level Smuggler" what should we do just let them bring the drugs in, I am no fan of the war on drugs an believe in treatment BUT we cant just give everyone a pass.

I would also point out that NO ONE wants the smugglers off the ship more then the CG crew, when we have smugglers on board the crews day goes from 12-16 hours a day too 16-20 hours a day.

Everything we do becomes expediently more difficult with security of everyone in the forefront of everyone's mind. I would point out also that the US Coast Guard is much more concerned with the welfare of the smugglers then the criminal organizations that sent them

This article is a bunch of crap, this is why people hate the press, as someone who used to do these patrols most of this story is out of context and some of it is just not true. These are not low level drug dealers these are smugglers caught with a significant amount of drugs
