Ok, historian correction here because it's annoying me that so many people don't know this. The everyday people in the tube scene is a (admittedly hamfisted) reference to the #MassObservation reports that landed on WSC's desk. What is #MassObservation? Glad you asked! 1/

Mass Observation was run by the Ministry of Information, which was tasked with supporting and proactively managing morale. Everyday people from all walks of life would monitor, document and submit reports to the MoI In order to help them figure out how to manage morale issues. 2/

The information and opinions offered in the tube vignette are mass observation reports. The scene is meant to show that contrary to the quisling Halifax, the British people were in no way inclined to kneel before some Austrian house painter with delusions of adequacy. 3/

Churchill received mass observation summaries and a selection of reports as part of the MoI briefs. Morale was just as important as bullets after May 1940. The scene is intended to show how that faith bolstered his spine. 4/

If you'd like to know more about Mass Observation, I recommend LONDON AT WAR by Ziegler. There are also some stellar journal articles and research papers available online. (I learned about Mass Observation from my Granny. She sent a wee note in every week as her bit.)
