This is idiotic. Being in a fraternity can be a fantastic experience. Yes, there are bad apples & terrible situations occasionally happen. But good far outweighs bad. Scholarship. Volunteering. Mentoring. This op-ed is like saying one bad cop shoot should disband police forces.

There are a lot of schools where the culture you reference is long gone. At mine, philanthropy events at several frats became just day drinking with no community benefit. Question is whether bans, etc. that drive Greek life underground actually help or hurt campus
-
Agreed that banning feeds into infantilism and oversteps bounds of students personal liberties. Just not sure if it's bad actors so much as bad leadership. Knew a lot of good guys who would get sucked into unhealthy culture

@nytimes I look forward to the counter-opinion piece. I was a very active member of my sorority and my exp. was positively life-changing. -

@nytimes We have a larger problem here, ignoring how differently these kids are going off to college. They aren't prepared, thx parents.

Making Greek life the scapegoat doesn't explain why colleges w/o them still have the same issues, now does it???

@FrankBruni Provide stats on NON-Greek binge drinking, sexual assault & segregation of say, sports clubs or student political orgs. Also how many thousands a year are killed by guns, cars & disease? Whereas you call for eliminating Greek organizations for single digit deaths? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Fraternities kill far less people than guns
-
That doesn't justify the behavior of frats
-
Well let’s focus our outrage at the biggest problems first

These organizations have far outlived their purpose and usefulness.

Because fraternities can be a positive, growing experience leading to future success. I know it was for me.
