Has Australia's process for approving same-sex marriage helped or hurt its democracy? http://nyti.ms/2htjmge

This process profoundly hurt many LGBTI and their families. All because Turnbull couldn’t stand up to his bullying conservative colleagues. Not democracy, but political cowardice.

What a narrow view of what happened in Australia. Very poor journalism 😡

Anytime we make improvements in a equality, we are moving in the right direction, even if there will be some bumps along the way.

Why don't we next have a plebiscite or "statistical survey" on Turnbull shitty copper internet vs fiber?

Hurt, in all likelihood. It was a waste of $100,000,000USD of taxpayer money which provided an answer that the government already knew.

They were hoping scare tactic ads using children and change in education would stop it!

And it didn't work. But it highlighted division in the community... Like somewhere else that springs to mind.

Hurt. LGBTIQ people have been abused, threatened, even physically assaulted due to this process. It has caused so much damage, and will continue to do so. We vote for politicians, we don’t vote on people’s human rights.

I agree, human rights should never be put to a public majority vote. The process was absolutely vile, but the outcome positive. Politicians can no longer argue that this is not what the Australian people want. It has been proven. This is what we want.

Australian leaders don't do leadership. They sit on their hands afraid to make strong decisions for fear of factions in their own parties replacing them.

I was surprised to hear Australia was so far behind the times. I assumed they already had gay marriage along with other countries. Not as progressive as I thought.
