I've had some difficult conversations w/ rightwing ppl trying to describe the difference between institutional racism & personal prejudice. Their argument re: affirmative action & the supposed oppression of white people hinge on NOT understanding that racism is prejudice + power.
-
Everyone is biased, we all internalize white supremacist messages because we live in a white supremacist culture. They believe reverse racism is a thing, because they see people being mean to white people, & don't understand systemic, historical oppression as the difference.
-
Speaking of bias, it's common to think the social norms & values of your culture are the best. The problems arise when we create powerful institutions that are inclusive only of those who conform to those norms, & that punish those with different culture. See: All of western civ.

See I was waiting for this, you, likely a white supremacist would say that. Someone from another culture would say differently. That is irrelevant and your worldview is small. Western civ is an amalgam of many cultures, many histories. I bet you measure it's success through war.

I Love Little House on the Prairie, but the series is dated. Reading it now, to my 9yo. Good chance to talk @ attitudes toward Natives by then new United States. 10% of kiddos class is native & she thought "Ma's" racism was a thing of past. We talked about whether that's true.
-
Yes,
#LauraIngallsWilder scholars discuss that here: http://beyondlittlehouse.com/blog/?s=Racism and here: http://littlehouseontheprairie.com/category/learning/history-learning/ … -
I'd love to check that out. I would consider myself a LIW & Little House expert. I've read all her works, including the Pioneer Girl manuscript & all posthumous publications multiple times. Historical racism may give us some insight into the modern day expression of same.

Much better to discuss Class. Lower Class Americans not being represented. We are supposed to have Justice for All. Everyone treated fairly and equally.

“Racism is so American that when we protest racism the average American assumes we’re protesting America...”
