This is the same Kal Penn who wrote and starred in the Harold & Kumar movies! Talk about being a hypocrite!
-
To be fair he was kind of the opposite of the smart Indian student stereotype

So are the Scots going to start protesting for Groundskeeper Willie? Gays complain about Smithers or babies offended by Maggie? Grow up sir, you nor Apu do not represent the Indian population.

k, that be said. Simpsons is exaggerated everything.
-
As an Indian it doesn't offend me too much still one of my favorite shows all time
-
Same here. I guess the biggest issue might be that they get a non-indian person doing the voice. All the characters on the Simpson's are exaggerated caricatures. Homer is your stereo typical, loud mouth sloppy, annoying American man.
-
Exactly it's just satire

Of course Apu is a stereotype, but every character on The Simpsons is one. That's literally the show.
-
Basically. Here's a few others: Wiggum: fat, piggy cop Flanders: Irrational bible thumper Burns: Evil, selfish, big business Willie: Scottish, kilt wearing, bag pipe playing, bare knuckle boxing, blue collar worker Homer: stupid, uncultured, materialistic, overweight American
-
Don’t forget Uter, the lederhosen-wearing, chocolate-eating German boy!

Apu no more a caricature than any other character in The Simpsons. You either like the show or you don't. But sadly, it's become fashionable these days to project oneself as thin-skinned and ultra-sensitive !

That was a blindspot for me, but yeah, Apu is some stereotype bullshit. Just because we grew up with it doesn't make it right.

All angry white people, please note the appropriate response

-
Not all white people are angry. It's okay to be white & happy AND not feel guilty about it. Life is too short & too complex to worry about what 7 billion other people think about lil' ol' me.

-
Well god damn...now im just confused. The internet is so fucking weird.
-
Yeah man totally. I was kind of stunned that this was the only comment that allows the author to his opinion at all, but I'm learning that this racism thing is alive and well so of course it would be a problem. Gonna try and catch this documentary to learn more about this issue
