My experience visiting was powerful and jarring. However what was truly eye-opening was the fact that everyone on my tour was shocked by what they were learning.

I would say Angola is pretty emblematic of Plantation life. It's also full of people in chains. It's modern day slavery.

Prisoners also work for free as janitors at state buildings and cooks at the Governor's mansion and State Capitol building.

A history that isn't told, or addressed with the utmost truth, is a cancer that will fester. Be brave, white America, tell it like it was!

There should be more. But THANK YOU
#WhitneyPlantation for recording and reporting this horrific & dark part of our history. It is important to remember the scars from our past that have made us who we are today. - 1 more reply

The states largest prison is literally a former plantation. So Louisiana has an active plantation. It's called Angola.

You want all prisons run like a plantation though, right? Also, Angola is 75% black and 71% life sentences. Literal slavery. There are documentaries on it if you need an education on the subject.

It is a prison & the prisoners are there for committing heinous crimes.

Not all of them. You should do some reading on the prison industrial complex. Drug laws and mandatory minimums are a big issue in this country.

This is how historical monuments referencing that period should be. Not just some white man on a horse. Show the reality of the institution they wanted to keep.

Once as a young person I went to a plantation and was confused by the language of referring to enslaved African people as “servants.” How genteel of them.

They truly believe using kinder words makes it better. Slavery by any other name is still slavery.
