Red meat for Trump's base. Sadly, after a distinguished service career, Kelly will be remembered for the taint of his association with Trump

If, by "compromise," Kelly means overtly or tacitly condone the ownership of other human beings as property, then technically he is correct.

WAS is the operative word here. Gen Lee, related to Martha Washington, was by all accounts a gentleman. Decency is lost when you pick up arms against your country to protect slavery.

And related by marriage. And the relationship does not grant him any special dispensation. In fact, makes the action more shameful.

Great Britain paid its former slaveholders when it abolished slavery. This avoided economic collapse and bloodshed.

But the South wouldn't accept this. They thought it was their cultural and moral right to own slaves

Also keep in mind a small percentage of big planters had the majority of slaves. Common folk did not hold a big stake. Maybe the majority of them could have been bought out, then the holdouts forced to get rid of them kind of like eminent domain. Can't say for sure in any case

Agreed. Pierce and Buchanan are considered among the worst presidents for their feckless leadership. Kansas and Nebraska Act was horrible, led to open fighting. Congress kept making concessions to the South instead of taking a firm stand. Lincoln was left with tough choices.

Was hard given the House counted slaves to account for population in the apportionment of districts.

I wasn't even thinking about that! You're right. Congressmen had heavy skin in the game because of 3/5 compromise. There's another horrible policy. But wouldn't they benefit from emancipation then as free men and woman count more?
