An 1864 letter from Lincoln was an early example of what can go wrong when a president contacts a grieving familyhttp://nyti.ms/2gteZBb

Why would the NYT spend time and money on a report that 1) compares Trump to Lincoln, and 2) further normalizes his abhorrent behavior?

Are you seriously comparing the POTUS’ disrespectful phone call with Abraham Lincoln? Oh, NYT, do better.

Everyone says the wrong thing sometimes. But, when actions and words are consistently cruel it becomes unforgivable.

Let's remember the problem wasn't the call, it was his behavior AFTER the call!! He handled it like an immature toddler.

And did Lincoln LIE about writing the letter and did the WH (and Pentagon) scramble to cover for him? FYI read @rollcall

It’s not about the call, anymore. Trump worsens everything. It’s about lying, silence on Niger, & character assassination of @RepWilson

Lincoln's letter to Mrs. Bixby is an eloquent expression of empathy. NYT got it wrong then, and now, by comparing it to DT, who has none.

Except... the Bixby letter is an example of how it should be done, regardless of original author. There is no comparison here.

And then Lincoln called Mrs. Bixby a liar and accused her of forging the letter, right? Because that's what Trump would have done.

Lincoln's letter showed compassion for a family's loss in a way that Trump's call - and his lies about it afterward - did not.
