At the time, more employers offered pensions. This was sold by compensation consultants as a way to cut pension obligations to the rest.

The consultants were hailed as gurus. The pension savings went into exec comp, and the rest of us got cut loose to the stock market.

This is insane. Without pensions, 401-Ks are the only avenue for many in the middle class to save for retirement.
