This one? "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand." -Atticus F.

If reading to kill a mockingbird makes you uncomfortable You should read to kill a mocking bird It is exactly what Harper Lee intended

Great if you’re White. A little tougher if you’re a Black kid.

I would guess reading a book is the among the least difficult experience with racism a black kid encounters in 2017

I suppose. I love the novel. Love it! Taught it to many Canadian classes, but I wouldn’t want to make US Black kids and read it.

because the only Black characters in TKAM lack agency. Neither Calpurnia nor Tom grow as characters. In fact they disappear at the end. 1/2

In fact both Tom and Calpurnia disappear at the end. They don’t matter except as vehicles for Atticus’ character development. 2/2

I think men and women read it differently. I saw calpurnia as the mother figure, teaching scout manners at the table, how to treat a guest

I'm uncomfortable looking at dissected frogs, reading poetry aloud, eating lunch with sporks, etc. The book was meant to be uncomfortable.

Good! If something makes you uncomfortable, it makes you think. Which is something that every educator should know. This is despicable.
