In the 70s, before foam rollers, my judo instructor had us use rolling pins ... yeah ... rolling pins ... did get the knots out though.

Eat an apple. The malic acid helps prevent lactic acid buildup in your muscles. My judo instructor told me this in the 70s, and it works.
