Much of the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey occurred outside of the boundaries drawn on official flood mapshttp://nyti.ms/2vSgzSF

Flood maps are initially drawn by hydrologists and GIS folks. Flood maps then become political tools and development leverage.

But which hydrologists, what data, how they model it, and direct political pressure from developers influence the maps

Flood ins is the cheapest insurance on the planet when you are in an X zone. Most cases $110 per year for $250k of coverage. Call your agent!

Really depends on location. I've never seen it that cheap. Hate when ppl throw out rates.

I'm speaking from experience, I deal with flood insurance on a regular basis. People should have it, but I rarely if ever see it for $110

Have some at $4k per year. But this was about homes not in flood zone.We recommend everyone buy it. Hundred or 2 a year totally worth it.👍

As a person in the insurance field, 99% of people getting flood insurance will have to pay at least $1,000 a year, usually a lot more.
