This is not normal. To condition yourself to do a split is a gradual process. Lots of stretching involved daily. This just causes damage.

Saw the vid -- THAT is abuse. Toughness is one thing (I enjoyed & benefited from football & karate), but that coach crossed the line.

encouraged 2 play while injured (concussions/fracture bones), school sports practice in extreme heat, & beauty pageants for toddlers

Sports is always good as soon as values are correctly understood as discipline, engagement, teamwork... the rest is just circumstantial.
