Moved. Not removed. Here's a letter from the University Pres. explaining why http://president.utexas.edu/messages/confederate-statues-on-campus?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=UTAustinSocial …

"Erected during the period of Jim Crow laws and segregation, the statues represent the subjugation of African Americans..."
-
Absolutely it's a complicated issue with a dark history. The university has been exploring options for 2 years.
-
& unfortunately will be a darker future for these statues if the correct measures aren't taken. I'm all for telling more of the history
-
It's not a very palatable history. After watching 12 Years a Slave, I don't understand how ANYONE could memorialize that institution...
-
...the institution of slavery, that is.

If I thought that removing statues that have been here for decades would help my black friends in any way, I'd be all for it.
-
Then let me offer you a reason: The gesture is at least, not honoring their ancestors' oppressors, and at most, toward a start of healing.
-
If only it were that simple.
-
You said in any way, I gave you 2 ways. No one said it would be simple, but not resisting every little advancement is a good place to start.
-
Have you ever thought that maybe we are being manipulated and that many black people aren't in favor of this? Latest poll says 44%.
-
Actually, I ASKED my friends of color, and each one said yes & explained why. That's enough for me. Even your poll leaves 56% in favor.
-
No, the majority of blacks polled said they didn't want them removed 44% to 40%. The rest had no opinion
-
As I said, actually talked 2 my black friends. Each 1 said yes & explained why. Good enuf 4 me. Why not talk 2 your black friends about it?

Great! I hope all University of Texas campuses follow suit. The monuments can be housed in an appropriate museum of American history.
